Former Residence of Madam Song sits north of the Houhai Lake. Song Qingling was married to Sun Yat-sen, acknowledged as the first President of China following the collapse of the Qing Dynasty. Madam Song received the honorary title of Co-Chairperson of the People's Republic of China, serving from 1968 until 1972 and briefly as President of China, also an honorary position and the only person ever to hold this title.

Her former residence used to be the Garden of Prince Zai at the end of Qing Dynasty. Madam Song lived here for 18 years until she passed away in 1981.

The gardens and architecture display many elements of classical Chinese design. There are man-made hills, trees and a lake in the courtyard.  The main building with two floors was built in 1962, combining both Chinese and Western elements. In 1982, the Madam Song’s Former Residence was opened to public.
