Jiumenkou Great Wall
Located in Suizhong County,Liaoning Province
Jiumenkou Great Wall is 15 kilometers away
from Shanhai guan Pass and its total lengthis
1,704 meters.Its southern ends Starts from cliffs
of high mountains and connects the Great Wall
stretching from Shanhai guan.Here the Great
Wall stretches along the crest northward until
the south bank of local Jiujiang River,building
big-scale of cross-wall bridges on theJiujiang
River with width ofhundreds of meters in order to continue to meander northwards among
those mountains.
The saying of “The Wall is walking on the river and theriver is flowing under the wall” is a
wonderful description of Jiumenkou Great Wall.Distinctive bridges surrounded by 8 piers
with shape of fusiform made by gigantic stones forming 9 water gates on the river of
Jiujiang with width of hundreds of meters.According to the historical record, Jiumenkou
Great Wall was firstly established in NorthQi( 479 BC-502 BC)dynasty and now the present
Jiumenkou Great Wall was rebuilt during Ming Dynasty( the year of 1381) and followed by
several years of restoration. In recent years with the archeology excavations, Iron cannons,
stone cannons, blue and white porcelains, big jar…etc was unearthed from the local site.
This reflects the situation of military defense system in Ming Dynasty and the life ofsoldiers
when they are guardingthe Great Wall. According to the introduction of the local historians,
Jiumenkou Great Wall has strict military significance, that's why it is called “ the first gateway
of northeast Beijing ”in history. Jiumenkou Great Wall was named after its 9 water-releasing
gates under the bridge.The water flows into Bohai Sea from west to east of great momentum,
it is the perfect combination of nature beauty and human landscape. So it boasts a good
name of “ the Great Wall on the water” and listed as the only world's cultural heritage in
northeast region of China by UNESCO in 2002.
