Located about 24 kilometers from Old Town of Dali, lies the famed Butterfly Spring which covers an area of nearly 1131 square meters. It used to be named as Bottomless Pond on the first place. It was said that there was a couple of lovers who found no way to fight against the strict regulations of feudalism had both jumped into the pond which later both of them had turned into two flying butterflies. Thus, the destination obtains its lovely name as Butterfly Spring.
The clear spring is hidden within a world of foliage. There are many visitors who threw coins into the pond and pray for a wish. Moreover, the dappled sunlight will offer silver light glittering in the pond as well which make the surrounding to be more tranquil and mysterious. When summer is just around the corner, the surrounding will be dotted with colorful flowers which look exactly like thousands of butterflies resting on the trees. However, when you take a closer look, then only you find out that all these colorful “butterflies” are just flowers that free their smiling face welcoming you.
Besides that, Butterfly Spring is also worth for its name as there are butterflies every here and there, dancing under the trees and in flowering shrubs which make the surrounding to be a paradise for visitors. A special festival that named “Butterfly Meeting” Festival will be taken place here every 15th day of the forth lunar calendar annually. For those who have a great interest on the butterflies, a visit during this festival is a must.
