Chairman Mao's Former Residence is a common farmer's cottage with the construction area of 472.92 square kilometers. Facing to north, the surroundings environment is fantastic. Mountains, water and green trees make this cottage look lively and poetic.
In December 1893, Mao Zedong was born in east of this house. Thirteen and a half tile-roofed houses in east belonged to Chairman Mao, and the left five and a half ones belonged to his neighbor. This cottage was repaired and reconstructed for several times by three generations. From the begging when his grandfather settled here, the five and a half cottages had been enlarged to thirteen and a half ones by 1929. During that period, the houses once caught fire and were robbed.
In 1929, the Kuomintang reactionaries confiscated Mao's cottages and fortune. After liberation, people's government repaired this cottage for many times and made is look more like original appearance. In 1950, the cottage was opened to public to Chinese. Two years later, it was opened to foreign visitors. In 1983, Deng Xiaoping inscribed "Former Residence of Mao Zedong" for it.
