Almost all the steep hillsides of the Dazu area contain an exceptional series of rock carvings named Dazu Rock Carvings which dating from the 9th to the 13th century. The rock carvings have covered Beishan, Baodingshan, Nanshan, Shimenshan as well as Shizhuanshan. They are remarkable for their aesthetic quality, their rich diversity of subject matter, both secular and religious, and the light that they shed on everyday life in China during this period. They provide outstanding evidence of the harmonious synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism.
Located at the southeastern part of Sichuan Province, Dazu is well known for its rock carving ever since before. Dazu County is located about 271 kilometers from Chengdu and about 167 kilometers from Chongqing. According to the historical records, Dazu was existed since year 758 of Tang Dynasty. So, it has been going through more than 1230 years of development history. The famed Daze Rock Carvings were built since year 650 of Tang Dynasty and the carving project had been continued until the Ming and Qing Dynasty. It stands the similar status as the Mogao Cave of Dunhuang, Gansu Province. Anyway, the rock carving here is absolutely different when compare with the rock carving of any other destinations in China or worldwide. There are more than 5000 statues and over 100000 Chinese characters and inscriptions as well as epigraphs can be found here.
