Dongyue Temple (Dongyue Miao in Chinese) is located at Chaoyangmenwai Dajie, Chaoyang District. Occupying an area of 0.04 square kilometers, with over 300 ancient buildings in the architectural styles of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties, it is the largest temple of the Zhengyi Taoist sect in Northern China.  The temple is famous for reserving many figures of couplets, deities, plaques and stele inscriptions. The temple is dedicated to the God of Taishan, Taoism's holiest mountain.

Dongyue Temple was first built in Yuan Dynasty by by Zhang Liusun, head of a Taoist school named Zhengyi, and Wu Quanjie, one of his disciples. After frequent expansions in the Ming and Qing dynasties, it came to acquire a three-courtyard layout.  The temple has three main halls, with statues made of rare wood representing the main gods of Taoism.  Of special interest to the visitor may be the 76 departments of the Taoist supernatural world, to which prayers could be made to ensure rainfall or good exam results, displaying a statue of the relevant god and its often bizarre attendants.

The Dongyue Temple contains the Beijing Folk Customs Museum, constructed in 1995. The temple holds a Temple Fair during Chinese New Year every year, displaying performances of folk traditions.  A trip to Dongyue Temple is a good way to get a better understanding of Taoism and Beijing's cultural heritage.
