Gansu Provincial Museum which located at Lanzhou City is the largest comprehensive museum of Gansu Province as well as one of the best sight that worth for a visit for every visitors to Lanzhou. The museum which was established in year 1956 has covered an area of over 18000 square meters. The museum has been divided into four main sections, consists of Gansu Color-painted Pottery Exhibition Hall, Civilization of Silk Road Culture Exhibition Hall, Pre-Historic Exhibitions Halls and Temporary Exhibition Halls.
Besides being as the home for precious linen and silk fabrics, ancient books, wooden and bronze vessels, the museum also houses a wide collection of color-painted potteries of Neolithic Age. A four meters tall Mammoth fossil replica which was excavated from the basin of Yellow River in year 1973 is stored here as well.
As Gansu Province is strategically located as the crossing point of Huangtu Highland, Tibet Highland and Mengxin Highland and at the same time at the beginning part of Yellow River, thus, the area is deeply enriched with plenty of ancient civilization leftovers as well as one of the earliest civilization centers of ancient China. Moreover, the Color-painted Pottery of Gansu is also well known throughout the world. All of these have ensured this type of pottery to be one of the highlights within the museum.
In addition, Gansu Province is also located at the starting point of Silk Road which connected China to the western Asia region. The rapid integration between China and the western region had encouraged the cultural integration in which left this land with precious historical artifacts that display within the museum nowadays.
