Jiefangbei Business Street is the first business pedestrian street throughout China. Located at the most prosperous downtown of Chongqing, the street is not only the evidence of civilization but also the most significant fruit of the development history of Chongqing.
Jiefangbei literally means People’s Liberation Monument. Before the area was developed into a business street, the name of Jiefangbei was in fact referred to the Monument of Victory in the War of Resistance, a monument in 27.5 meters high that sit at the center of the area. The monument which was designed in the shape of a clock tower has standing proudly here to celebrate the Communists’ liberation victory of the city from seventy years of colonial and right-wing occupation throughout the years.
Nowadays, Jiefangbei means more than what it used to be during the early years of People’s Republic of China. It is now the commercial heart as well as the Central Business District of Chongqing. The area is isolated by broad paved pedestrian square and concrete jungles. More than 2000 stores and shops of various kinds can be found here. Besides that, offices and commercial associations like banks, stock markets, postal and telecommunication services and entertainment facilities are all available here.
In average, about 30000 people will be visiting this area daily and the total amount of visitors will be increased double fold or sometimes perhaps triple fold especially during public holidays. This is the busiest part throughout Chongqing and also the must visit destination when you are here.
