Jinghang Grand Canal is the longest, the biggest canal project as well as one of the oldest Ancient Grand Canal throughout the world. The canal begins at Beijing in the north and stretching to Hangzhou in the south which passing through Tianjin, Hebei Province, Shandong Province, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province. Besides that, the canal also interconnected with the five major water system of China including Hai River, Yellow River, Huai River, Yangtze River and Qiantang River with a total length of 1794 kilometers. In fact, Jinghang Grand Canal has gone through development history of over 2500 years.
As one of the ancient canal, Jinghang Grand Canal has contributed a lot in stimulating the economical and cultural development of both sides of the canal. Moreover, it also helps the development of agricultural towns and industrial centers surrounding the canal as well. As one of the oldest canal in China, it shares the similar status as the Great Wall of China as the great construction of ancient China that well known by people of the world.
Jinghang Grand Canal can be described as one of the greatest engineering of the ancient Chinese people, the precious gift by the Chinese ancestors as well as the living cultural heritage of the world. Actually, the construction of the ancient Grand Canal was begun within the Spring Autumn Period and the development of project was continued in Tang and Song Dynasty. Finally the canal was connected with the five river systems and became one of the most important networks of water transportation during Yuan Dynasty. Besides serving as an evidence for the water system development of China, it also contributed a lot in the outcome of ancient towns and cities along the canal.
