Juyonguan Great Wall

The Great Wall at Juyongguan is a strategic pass to Inner Mongolia and provided defense for Beijing, only 50km away.  The pass is one of three main passes in the Great Wall, with the others at Jiayuguan (to the west in Gansu Province) and Shanhaiguan.

The first fortifications were built here during the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC) though it wasn't until the Southern and Northern Period (386-589 AD) that they were linked to the Great Wall.  The present fortifications date back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) though the marble "Cloud Platform", with carved pictures lining the doorway, was constructed during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).  This mighty fortress has been the site of many battles, from ancient times right up to the Second World War against the Japanese!

The scenery around the pass is also a draw, with lush vegetation carpeting the slopes of the valley side.
