Sand Lake Scenic Area with its unique characteristics with combination of lakes, sand mountains, birds and fish has ensured the scenic area to stand out among other scenic areas throughout China. The Sand Lake Scenic Area is situated within Shizuishan City and Pingluo County which is about 25 kilometers from the city center of Shizuishan and 56 kilometers from Yinchuan. Besides that, the scenic area can be easily reached by Yaoye Expressway which further encourages the growth of tourism industry of the scenic area. The whole area of the Sand Lake is about 80 square kilometers with reaching 45 square kilometers of water surface and 22.52 square kilometers of desert surface.
Sand Lake Scenic Area is the paradise of birds. Various species of birds can be found here with the total amount of over 1000000 birds. While the spring and the autumn seasons are both the most suitable seasons for bird observing. Most of the birds at Sand Lake are the migrating birds.
