Tunxi Ancient Street is located at the city center of Huangshan downtown. The ancient street with total length of 832 meters at 5 to 8 meters width has gone through over few hundred years of history. It is the best preserved ancient business street with the construction style of Song, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Nowadays, the street which is paved with maroon flagstones is accompanied by shops on both sides which generally two or three floors. All these shops are featuring typical Anhui style with stone basement, brick construction and tiles roofing. Most of these architectures are having the appearance of shops in front while houses and workshops are located at the back. Almost every visitor will be amazed by the uniquely designed street in which described by an American professor as an Oriental Ancient Rome. Now, the street is often used as a natural studio for the production of films and TV series.
Besides the ancient street, you may also take the opportunity to visit two museums which located along this street. Tunxi Museum is well known for its furniture collection of Ming and Qing Dynasties on the first floor and an exhibition hall regarding Chinese calligraphy and paintings upstairs. While Wancuilou is another museum that displays the four treasures of study; including writing brushes, ink sticks, ink slabs and papers.
While enjoying the peaceful surrounding of the ancient street, you may take the opportunity to do some shopping as well. Little bargaining is necessary in order to get the items at your desired rate. If you have enough time to spend here, you must be able to find the souvenirs that you love the most.
