Wolong National Natural Reserve is a natural conservation area which located in Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province. Situated about 130 kilometers from Chengdu on the southern slope of Qionglai Mountains, the area established in year 1963 has covered 200000 hectares. It is one of the earliest founded national natural reserves throughout China. Moreover, it also serves as the venue for China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda which established at Wolong with the efforts of Chinese government and World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Besides that, Wolong National Natural Reserve is well known as the Hometown of Giant Panda as well as the largest and best known panda reserve throughout China. There are about 150 pandas living freely within the conservation. 67 captive pandas throughout the total amount are managed by the China Conservation and Research for the Giant Panda. Besides that, national key protected endangered animals like golden monkeys, antelope and 56 species of animals can be found here. According to the report of the research center, there are 450 species of vertebrates here which consist of 103 species of beasts, 283 species of birds, 21 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 18 species of fish and about 1700 species of insects. On the other hand, over 4000 species of plants are found within the conservation area as well.
The unique natural topography of Wolong National Natural Reserve has ensured Wolong to be blessed with picturesque scenery, convenient temperature and various types of attracting spots. It is a perfect destination which combines mountains, waters, forest, caves, steep cliffs as well as the fantastic cultural relics of ethnic Zang and Qiang.
