Xiaoheikou Great Wall

Xiaoheikou Great Wall is located in the forested area of western Liaoning province.
Liaoning is the northeast province of China many Great Wall sites from different dynasties. History shows that the eastern start point of ancient Great wall was actually in Liaoning rather than Shanhaiguan.
Xiaoheikou Great Wall is an 8.9-kilometer long section Great Wall built in Hongwu period Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It was constructed using 31 watch towers, 18 terraces and 14 beacon towers with most of these ancient towers still untouched since their abandonment. The Great Wall goes through 6 villages and Xiaohekou is one of them. Because of its remoteness and steepness, this section of the Great Wall receives few visitors and tourists and is well preserved.
Xiaoheikou is a 30-householder village situated just under the ancient great wall site down the hills. Standing in the village and looking up at the mountain, the Great Wall can be easily photographed.

This great wall section was actually built by the famous Ming general Qijiguang on the base of Northern Qi fortifications with more than 2000 years history. Going into the village, tourists will be impressed by the timeless nature of this village, with its double sloped, black tiled roofs and whitewashed walls decorating the houses. According to history, most of the villagers here are actually the descendents of general Qijiguang’s soldiers who were from Yiwu in Zhejiang province. Those Yiwu soldiers built the Great Wall and relocated their families here following its construction. Their descendants have lived here to this day and, although in a different province, many of their customs are still in keeping with those of southern Chinese.
