Taihu Lake is the third largest fresh water lake in China with water surface of over 2000 square kilometers at the southern part of Yangtze River delta. Taihu Lake with 48 islets of various sizes, 72 peaks and peninsulas are combined together to outcome with a wonderful picture of natural beauty. Although there are many interesting spots surrounding this huge lake, Yuantouzhu at the northwestern bank of the lake is well known as the best viewing point of the lake. Yuantouzhu is a peninsula that looks like the head of a turtle that stretches into the lake; therefore, it was given the name as Yuantouzhu which means Turtle Head Peninsula.
The Yuantouzhu Park is famous with the breathtaking natural landscape which dotted with manmade architecture in between. It has long been the natural retreat for the imperial families since 2500 years ago. Anyway, the Turtle Head Peninsula Park that you visit nowadays was primarily built in year 1918 with various attractions like Chongshan Hill, the Turtle Head Spot, Hengyun Villa, Taihu Fairy Islands, Jiangnan Orchid Garden and Sino-Japanese Friendship Oriental Cherry Plantation Farm.
The Turtle-Head Peninsula Scenic Spot is richly endowed by nature and thus an ideal place for natural enjoyment, vacation and leisure. The Turtle-Head Peninsula Resort at the Zhongdu Hill, surrounded by water with green trees and beautiful scenery, was listed one of the first sanatoriums as early as in the 1950’s by the State Council.
