As a major tourist-attraction, Badaguan Scenic Area is located in the east of Qingdao City, Shandong Province. There used to be eight streets which were named after the eight great military forts of the ancient times. Therefore, people call it Badaguan (eights passes/forts). Since 1949, two more avenues were built in the area and there are now actually ten avenues.
Numerous classic European houses built when Qingdao was a German protectorate (1897-1914) sit along the streets. It boasts more than 200 different architectural styles ranging from German to Dutch. Many of its residents are retired Communist Party members and military officials.
