Beijing Zoo is located in Xizhimenwai Street, Haidian District in the west of Beijing and is close the the Beijing Exhibition Hall. It occupies an area of 86 hectares, with water covering roughly 8.6 hectares of this. Established during the Qing Dynasty in 1908, Beijing Zoo has a history of over one hundred years and was the first zoo to be established in China.

During the Ming Dynasty the area was established as an imperial park, though during the Qing Dynasty it became the residence of one of the royal family, gaining the name "Sanbeizi Mansion".  The zoo itself retains many of the original features of a Chinese garden. In the 32nd year of Guangxu Emperor Qing Dynasty (1906), plants and animals were cultivated and the area gained the name "Ten Thousand Animal Park". After the founding of People's Republic of China, the zoo was renovated and expanded, becoming "Xijiao Park" and was officially renamed Beijing Zoo in 1955..
 
Beijing Zoo now contains over 7000 animals of 600 different species. The majority of animals in Beijing zoo are rare animals from within China, such as the Panda and the Golden Snub-Nosed Monkey. It also exhibits numerous animals from all over the world including Zebras from Africa, Polar Bears from the Arctic, and Kangaroos from Australia. The Zoo houses not only a wide variety of living spaces for the animals but also boast various traditional Chinese buildings as well as luscious gardens. Today's zoo includes such attractions as an aquarium, a reptile house, a Giant Panda house and many more!
