Occupying over 1,000 acres, China Aviation Museum is situated at the foot of Xiaotangshan Hill in Changping District. On November 11, 1989, it was opened to the public to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Founding of Air Force of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

At present, the museum has a collection of over 200 airplanes and over 700 different weaponry samples, most of which are considered national cultural treasures and world aviation treasures. The Aviation Museum consists of three parts. The first part is the tunnel, of which both entrances are guarded by an F-7 (the Chinese MIG-21). The second part is a 'flight line' of nineteen fighters parked on the taxiway outside. The third part is the grassy public area at the corners of the airfield and a small lake.  Also on display is Chairman Mao's personal plane.
