The China Numismatic Museum, or Beijing Ancient Monetary Museum, was built in October 1993, and is located on Dongerhuan Zhonglu. Built in the Ming Dynasty, Deshengmen Jianlou (the building which houses part of the collection) has a history of over 500 years. It consists of four floors with 82 arrow slits.

The China Numismatic Museum is the sole museum devoted to currency in Beijing. It exhibits the development of Chinese currency from the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC - 1122 BC) to modern times. Nearly one thousand examples of currency are displayed in the museum that ranges from the "shell coins" used in the Shang Dynasty the first paper currency in the world, created during the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and further to the currency currently in use in China. The various kinds of coins reflect the politics, economy and social reform at that time.

Additionally, the Ancient Coin Museum also holds temporary exhibitions, which a perfect chance for enthusiasts to view rare currency.
