Dazhao Lamasery is the oldest Lamaist Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia . A leader of Tumote Tribe Mongolia was in charge of the construction of Dazhao Lamasery in 1580 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The Dazhao Temple was originally called Hongci Temple. Also because of the 2.5-meter silver Buddha in this temple, it got another name “Silver Buddha Temple”. In Mongolia, it is called “Yikezhao” which means “big”(Da in Chinese). This is why it is called “Dazhao Lamasery”.
The precious culture relics include statues of Buddha, scriptures, ancient paintings etc. Emperor Kangxi visited this temple in early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). At present, this temple is well-known as a tourist attraction because of the impressive buildings, delicate frescos, splendid statues, musical instruments and fine collection of Buddhist scriptures.
