The Hanging Temple is built into a cliff near Mount Heng in the province of Shanxi. Since ancient times, it has been listed as the first wonder of Mountain Heng. Built at the end of Beiwei (around A.D. 471- A.D.523), this temple has over 1,400 years’ history. The existing building was the relic of Ming and Qing dynasties. Along with the Yungang Grottoes, the Hanging Temple is one of the main tourist attractions and historical sites in the Datong area. This temple is unique not only for its location on a sheer precipice but also because it includes Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements.
