Located in southwest of Xinjiang, this lake is in Kashgar which is about 1,500 km/932 mile from Urumqi. It sits at the foot of Muztag Ata-Konggur Mountains (called Father of Glacier by local people).

Lake Karakuli means "Black Sea" , resembling a glittering pearl embedded among the alpine peaks, reflecting the surrounding snow-capped mountains. It is 3,600 meters /2.2miles above sea level. With the depth 30 meters/0.02 mile, this lake covers a total area of over 100,000 square kilometers/10,000 hectares.
