The Site of Peking Man is located at Zhoukoudian Village, 48 kilometres southwest of Beijing. Close to the village lies Dragon Bone Hill, famed for the "dragon bones" that went into Chinese medicine.  These dragon bones were actually fossilized remains. It was in the limestone caves within Dragon Bone Hill that the fossilized remains of remains of Homo Erectus, a primitive form of human, were found.

Homo Erectus Pekinensis, also known as Peking Man, remains found at the site date from 500,000 to 780,000 years ago. The first fossilized remain, a tooth, was found by Otto Zdansky and Johan Gunnar Andersson in 1921, though the first complete skull of Peking Man was discovered in December 1929 by Pei Wenzhong, a Chinese paleoanthropologist. Later, large-scale excavations were too place on several occasions where human fossils were found. Around 200 fossil fragments from 40 individuals have been found. The discovery of 100,000 stone implements, charred bones and ash have shown that Peking Man probably knew how to use fire and was capable of producing basic tools. The Peking Man site is an important location for research into the evolution of the human race and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987.  There is also a museum and research center on site.
