Established in 1953, Xinjiang Museum covers an exhibition area of 7,800 square meters. It is characterized by its strong Uygur and Russian flavors. An 18-meter green-tiled dome stands in the main hall. Walls are decorated with enormous murals.
The museum located along the Altai Road in downtown. It was first an agriculture exhibition hall before changing into the Xinjiang Museum in 1962. At present, it is a large-scale folk custom museum. The culture relics show colorful custom of 12 minority ethnic groups vividly. These custom include marriage, festival, religious, living, food, ceremony etc.
The Museum becomes famous for rich collections of silk artifacts from different periods of history. Other culture relics include pottery and porcelain, terra-cotta figures, weapons, scriptures.
One of the unique items on display is the human corpse called mummy which is formed naturally. Some of these mummies can be traced back to 4,000 years ago. To our surprise, there is a charming Loulan beauty with hair and skin well preserved. This Loulan beauty mummy has attracted most visitors'' attention.
Xinjiang Museum has not only important study value of humankind and ethnic composition in this region in the history, but also famous tourist destination to visitors both in China and foreign countries.
