Beijing Christian Churches

Beijing has fewer Christian Churches than Cathedral Churches. There are mainly 12 Christian churches: Chongwenmen Church, Zhushikou Church, Xiehe Church, Gangwashi Church, Gonglihui Haidian Church, etc.

Chongwenmen Church
Chongwenmen Church is the biggest Christian church in Beijing. It was initially built up in 1870, Qing Dynasty. It was the first chapel built by the United Methodist Church in Beijing and even North China. It has basically kept the original exterior decoration today, though it was smaller in scale at first. When the former US president Bill Clinton paid a visit to China in 1998, he attended the Sunday service in Chongwenmen Church.

How to get there: Take the buses of No. 106, 108, 110, 111, 807, and get off at Chongwenmen station. You can also take the subway.

Gangwashi Church:
Gangwashi Church is the existing earliest Christian Church in Beijing. It was initially built up by London Missionary Society in 1863. At present, Gangwashi Church has more than 5,000 disciples

Chaoyang Church
Chaoyang Church is the latest built-up Christian church in Beijing. With the deepening implementation of the Chinese Communist Party’s policy of religious freedom, and to satisfy vast religious believers’ need of carrying out church activities, the Chaoyang government approved to set up a new Christian church. A foundation ceremony was held on December 18, 2003, and the church was finally set up on September 12, 2005. It was officially put to use on December 16 that year.

Kuanjie Church
Kuanjie Church was originally set up by the United Methodist Church. The United Methodist Church set up eight churches in Beijing.

The Beijing Committee of Three-self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Church
It is a patriotic organization established by Chinese Christians. It was set up in August, 1954. Its principal is: Unite and educate nationwide Christians; Love China and obey the government laws; Participate in socialist construction; Stick to the principal of self-governance, self-growth and self-promotion. Beijing Committee of Three-self Patriotic Movement of the Protestant Church and Beijing Christian Council are jointly called the Two Councils of Beijing Christianity.
