Wangjingshi 望京石
Wangjingshi is a hug rock located in Juyong Waizhen, Badling Great Wall area. There are many legendary stories on the origin this rock, here we just give you the most recent two stories: One was happened in Qin dynasty more than 2000 year ago. It was said that large number of farmers and civilians were forced to built the Great Wall by the emperor Qin outside of their hometown.
Staying away from home for long time, most of them miss their homes and families very much. The rock was just standing out of the place and was found by these people working nearby. So they tried to stand on the rock and looked out to the directions of the capital (their hometown). The amazing thing was that
they could see their hometown and families very clearly thousands of miles away from this rock. Since then this rock was called "Wangxiangshi"( a rock that can look to hometown).
The other story goes like this: It was in the year of 1900 when Eight Power Allied Army invaded the capital Beijing. In order to escape from the attack of the invaders, Cixi, the Empress Dowager, dressed up as a countrywoman, rode a donkey cart while held the emperor Guangxu and went for the direction of Xi’an. During her escaping way, she passed on Badaling Great Wall and saw the legendary Wangjingshi. Then she stood on the rock and looked out to the direction of Beijing. When looking out her palaces far away and came to think of the miserable situation now, she wept in deep grief. Since then, the Wangjingshi got its name and the story had passed on to now.
Wangjingshi has become a famous site of Badaling Great Wall. Wangjingshi is natural granite rock of 2 meters high and 7 meters long. On the north of the big rock, three Chinese characters of “Wangjingshi” were engraved on the surface. Standing on the rock and looking out to the south, visitors can see the huge green forests and white cloud floating in the sky. It is said to be true that during sunny days visitors can even catch the sight of Beijing city which is 50 km away.
