The Legend of Kung Fu, fabulous Kung Fu show at Red Theatre Beijing.

On Monday evening I visited the newly built Red Theatre where I saw the world renowned Chinese performance - The Legend of Kung Fu.

I travelled with my tour guide via the subway and bus to reach the area of Chongwen. I had not been on a bus in Beijing up until then, so that was a good experience. The buses are extremely cheap and are efficient, modern and clean.

As we arrived early, we took a walk around the area. We passed through a few markets, had a little browse and I bought a couple of small souvenirs. We then sat down for coffee. The walk to the Red Theatre from where we were was really interesting – the guide took me through some back roads where I was able to see a side to Beijing I had not yet witnessed – poorer, rundown housing and shacks - a complete contrast to the ambience literally a couple of hundred metres away, but inequality that every major city possesses.

We arrived to the Red Theatre and I was nicely surprised with a beautiful red, structured building – a building that would impress the ordinary person, not just an architect. After showing our tickets and taking a few snaps, we moved inside, got seated and waited for the show to start.

The legend of Kung Fu follows the story of a young boy who, like every boy in China, dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master. After an emotional departure from his mother, he is taken into a temple. On the road to enlightenment the young monk encounters many difficulties and temptations, but through hard work and over time, he conquers and achieves his sacred goal.

For the purpose of the international crowds, the narrations are in English, with English and Chinese subtitles shown above the stage. There are 6 stages to the show, each lasting just over 10 minutes and representing the next chapter in the young boy's life.

I was amazed. Not only does the show present to the audience the importance of Kung Fu in Chinese culture and what it really means, but it eradicates the stereotype that kung fu is all about fighting, violence and defence. I was mesmerised by the Kung Fu, the dance and the acrobatics. What makes this performance original and impressive is the fusion of modern dance with Chinese traditional arts.

The performers are the best Kung Fu practitioners from all over China with their combined average age being just 17! The whole production is up to international high standards and certain parts really left me in awe!

The Legend of Kung Fu is produced by China's leading performance art production company, China Heaven Creation International Performing Arts. When in Beijing, it is a show NOT to be missed!
