Daguanlou Cinema and Drama House, built in 1905, is the oldest cinema in China and the oldest operating movie theatre in the world. The films shown in Daguanlou at the time it opened time had no sound and were simply Chinese Dianying, or "electric shadow." Daguanlou is located in Qianmen Avenue, the oldest business street in Beijing. The Cinema has been welcoming numerous visitors to films and shows since its establishment and continues to be a popular movie destination even today. Most films showed here are Chinese, and audiences here can enjoy local snacks and tea while watching the film.
